Former professional bull rider and champion on the WPT and PPT circuits, Lee Markholt, Jr. grew up enjoying the small-town feel of the Northwest region in which he lived. As a teenager, he first learned how to play poker from his father and played often with friends. It wasn’t until, while recovering from a bull riding injury, he began to read his father’s poker books. He tested his knowledge around the local card rooms and soon realized that he could earn more money on weekends playing poker than he could all week working in his father’s butcher shop. He then decided to quit riding bulls, so poker filled a competitive void as well.
Lee is very much a family man, the father of two adult children, and grandfather to three. He is also very close with his brothers and sisters.
When asked what game is his best he answered, “No-limit. To me it is poker at its purest form. I still consider myself a cash game specialist even though I’ve had a lot of success in tournaments. I like to do both. It keeps me from getting bored.”
Lee remembers several proud moments in poker. However, he says, “It’s a toss up between the 2008 Reno WPT and winning the 205 PPT at Bellagio. I’m also very proud of the fact that I hold the record for most WPT cashes.”
About joining Team Victory, he says, “I enjoy these guys and I feel a strong trust in who they are.”
